How Cloud Computing is Like Transforming a ’68 Dodge Dart I’ve spent a lot of time lately in front of customers trying to help them understand what cloud technology means and, more important, how it can help their businesses be more efficient, effective and better able to meet or exceed their goals and objectives. In most cases, prior to speaking, the reactions I see are vacant stares and furrowed brows (sometimes on the same person…which is just a little disconcerting) as there is just way too much conflicting information that these businesses have to deal with. In today’s technology landscape,

Microsoft and HP Join Hands on the Cloud There may not be any love lost between Microsoft and Google in the cloud computing space (and elsewhere) (See: Google vs Microsoft: US Government Agrees to End Microsoft Bias  and Microsoft And Google Are At It Again); however, it would seem that Microsoft is not averse to the occasional tie-up with an IT biggie, especially one who poses no direct threat to its software supremacy. Microsoft recently announced a global, four-year deal with HP to deliver its communications and collaboration applications via HP’s cloud services. As per the press release, the deal

How a Cloud Infrastructure Can Save or Make You Money Before you left click that mouse to go to that other “work related” page, wait a few seconds while I explain what I’m talking about.  While there is a ton of hyped up, blown out and super hyperventilated information out there about how the cloud makes your life better, reduces your workload and ultimately makes your coffee and butters your toast, not much is said about how the cloud can help your company save or make money. Real money…not that kinda-sorta-maybe-coulda money, but real put-it-in-the-bank money. Before I start my

How to Build a Private Cloud Despite it being so easy to just hook into the public cloud by going to Google, Amazon, Microsoft and other public cloud vendors, a private cloud offers a bit more control to your virtualization and automation efforts. Many people have already tried it and posted up how they did it and all of them have mentioned the headaches and migraines that are in store for you. The main reason this is so, is because there is no one set way to build a private cloud, although there are some attempts currently underway to do

Deutsche Bank Conquers the Cloud Considering the dynamic, constantly-changing nature of cloud computing, “conquering” it may be an exaggeration; however, that was the title bestowed onto Deutsche Bank by its peers in the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA). Late last month, the ODCA announced that Deutsche Bank won the “Conquering the Cloud Challenge,” a competition to identify best practices for cloud and data center solutions. The ODCA is an independent IT consortium comprised of several reputed companies who have come together “to provide a unified customer vision for long-term data center requirements.” It has twelve members on its Board –

Federal Roadmap to Your Cloud Achieve Greater Efficiency and Contain Costs Today, the Federal government operates and maintains approximately 2,100 datacenters, with a mandate to reduce that number by 800 by 2015. With virtualization, this goal is achievable, especially because fewer than 15 percent of Federal x86 servers are currently virtualized, according to recent estimates. If agencies undertook a simple 2:1 server consolidation effort, they could presumably reduce the number of physical x86 servers by half and achieve significant cost savings for this basic effort. Their savings potential, however, is much greater, considering that VMware customers achieve average consolidation ratios
