For our 2010 annual revenues, we are raising our guidance to be in the range of $2.725 and $2.8 billion, an increase of 35% to 38% from 2009.”

“We are gratified that customers continue to recognize the value that VMware provides in modernizing infrastructures and providing a pragmatic path to cloud computing,” said Paul Maritz, president and chief executive officer. “As customers continue on this path, they are looking for a strategic partner to help move them forward, and VMware will continue to invest to deliver solutions that enable IT-as-a-service.”

Recent Highlights & Strategic Announcements

– On July 13, 2010, VMware announced VMware vSphere 4.1, an updated
version of VMware’s flagship virtualization and cloud infrastructure
platform. With VMware vSphere 4.1, VMware once again sets the bar in
virtualization, coupling dramatic scalability and performance
enhancements with new management capabilities to deliver the most
powerful foundation for cloud computing. The announcement included
additions to VMware’s vCenter Family of management products and new
packaging for the SMB market.

– In the second quarter 2010, VMware announced a series of moves to
further its Open Platform-as-a-Service (Open PaaS) offerings and
enable application portability across private and public cloud
environments. The announcements included the acquisition of Gemstone,
which introduces sophisticated data-caching capabilities; a new
partnership with Salesforce.com, whereby Java and Spring framework
developers will be able to deploy new applications into a cloud and
leverage Salesforce.com capabilities; and a partnership with Google,
whereby the Spring framework will be integrated with Google’s App
Engine.

– On June 10, 2010, VMware announced it is positioned by Gartner, Inc.
in the Leaders Quadrant of the Gartner Magic Quadrant for x86 Server
Virtualization Infrastructure. According to the report: “The x86
Server Virtualization Infrastructure market is a foundation for two
extremely important market trends — infrastructure modernization and
cloud computing.”(1)

– On June 9, 2010, VMware and Novell announced an expansion to their
partnership with an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement
through which VMware will distribute and support the SUSE(R) Linux
Enterprise Server operating system at no additional cost to vSphere
customers. With this agreement, customers can more easily and
cost-effectively virtualize Linux applications, accelerate their
evolution to a fully virtualized datacenter and simplify portability
of their applications to cloud environments.

TOKYO (Nikkei)–Fujitsu Ltd. (FJTSY, 6702.TO) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will share data centers worldwide in a bid to catch up to Google Inc. (GOOG) and other pioneers in the business of providing software and computing services online, the Nikkei reported Friday.

The effort will combine Microsoft software with Fujitsu customer service to speed both firms’ expansion into cloud computing.

Fujitsu operates 90 or so data centers in 16 countries. As early as this year, it will begin hosting Microsoft cloud services at its Tatebayashi center in Gunma Prefecture. It plans to do the same at locations in the U.S., the U.K., Singapore and elsewhere, equipping them with the necessary technology. In deciding to work with Microsoft, Fujitsu acknowledges that its own cloud services have limited prospects for growth abroad.

Microsoft is racing to expand its cloud services worldwide, having opened massive data centers in Chicago and Dublin last year. But the U.S. firm has been stretched thin in customer support and other areas and will seek to reinforce them in cooperation with Fujitsu. Microsoft also believes that teaming with Fujitsu will help it make customers of globalizing Japanese companies.

The partners are considering joint investment in new data centers, which cost tens of billions of yen to build.

Microsoft this January introduced Windows Azure, which gives businesses Internet-based access to Windows software stored at Microsoft data centers instead of on their own computers. Through its partnership with Microsoft, Fujitsu will try to tap this base of Windows users.

Salesforce.com, a leader in cloud services, has about 77,000 customers worldwide, including the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. Google invested around 700 billion yen in its cloud computing business from 2006 to 2009. Among its customers in Japan is toilet manufacturer Toto Ltd. (5332.TO).

Both firms are pushing more aggressively into Japan, threatening domestic information technology giants. Fujitsu will seek to counter this challenge by working with Microsoft to build a global presence in cloud computing.

The world market for cloud computing will grow to $55.5 billion in 2014 from $16 billion in 2009, reckons U.S. research firm IDC. Japan’s IT industry is hampered by its inability to offer the same level of cloud services worldwide even as more domestic firms globalize.

This is the second time Skytap has been recognized for its leadership and innovation in cloud computing over the last month. In early June, Skytap was named to the 2010 SD Times 100 list alongside Amazon, Google and Salesforce.com.

Red Herring’s Top 100 North America list has become a mark of distinction for identifying promising new companies and entrepreneurs. The Red Herring 100 are evaluated on both quantitative and qualitative criteria — such as financial performance, technology innovation, quality of management, execution of strategy, and integration into their respective industries. This unique assessment of potential is complemented by a review of the actual track record and standing of a company, which allows Red Herring to make the list an invaluable instrument for discovering and advocating the greatest business opportunities in the industry. Skytap joins past award winners including Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo!, Skype, Salesforce.com, YouTube, and eBay.

“Skytap has exceeded its revenue goals over the last few years and recognition as a Red Herring 100 winner pays tribute to our exceptional team and their ability to execute on our long-term vision,” said Scott Roza, CEO of Skytap. “Skytap will continue to build upon its heritage in cloud automation and lead the charge in providing customers with a self-service solution for running enterprise applications in the cloud.”

Skytap provides cloud automation solutions for enterprises and software vendors to develop, test, migrate, evaluate, demo, and train on new and existing applications in the cloud. Skytap empowers users to create multi-machine virtual data centers with point-and-click ease, while enabling IT users to gain visibility and control, and reduce costs by 70% or more. Businesses of all sizes can deploy Skytap in a day and accelerate their transformation to the cloud.

“Choosing the companies with the strongest potential was by no means a small feat,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “After rigorous contemplation and discussion, we narrowed our list down from hundreds of candidates from across North America to the Top 100 Winners. We believe Skytap embodies the vision, drive and innovation that define a successful entrepreneurial venture. Skytap should be proud of its accomplishment, as the competition was very strong.”

The Top 100 winners were announced at a special awards ceremony on June 24 at the Red Herring North America Conference in San Diego. The full list of winners is available at: http://www.herring100.com/RHNA2010/2010winners/2010winners.html.

Launches the Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure Enabling Developers and ISVs to Meter, Price, and Bill for Windows Azure Platform Cloud Solutions

REDWOOD SHORES, CA–(Marketwire – June 16, 2010) -

Company News

Zuora, the company that defined and continues to lead the subscription billing industry, today announced that it will join the Microsoft Windows Azure Technology Adoption Program (TAP) and help in the advancement of Microsoft’s cloud computing platform. Zuora is the first on-demand billing and subscription management provider to be chosen by Microsoft from among 300 ISV partners.

As part of the Windows Azure TAP program, Zuora is making immediately available its Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure.

Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure helps developers and ISVs meter, price, and bill for their Windows Azure platform cloud-based applications and services.

The New Face of Cloud Commerce — Metering, Pricing, Billing

As the world quickly moves to cloud computing, developers, ISV partners and enterprises need the right tools to build, run, and scale their solutions in the cloud and reduce the time-to-market and to support the changing subscription economy. Microsoft created the Windows Azure TAP to ensure the world’s most innovative companies not only adopt Windows Azure platform, but also help drive its success.

Concurrently, the shift to cloud computing is also driving substantial changes to the software market including how ISVs sell and charge for access. Customers are demanding software solutions on a subscription basis, using on-demand, pay-for-what-you-use models that mirror the elastic nature of the cloud itself. This is the new face of cloud commerce.

Unless vendors of cloud solutions — IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS — also have the right tools needed to meter, price, and bill for their offerings, cloud computing will not achieve its full potential.

Introducing the Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure

To drive success and adoption for the Windows Azure ecosystem, Zuora has delivered the Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure in conjuncture with Microsoft to enable developers and ISVs to easily automate commerce from within their Windows Azure application and/or website in a matter of minutes. With the Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure, Windows Azure developers and ISVs can:

create flexible price plans and packages;

support usage and pay-as-you-go pricing models;

initiate a subscription order online;

accept credit cards with PCI Level 1 compliance; and

manage the customers, recurring subscriptions, and invoicing.

The Zuora Toolkit for Windows Azure can be accessed at http://developer.zuora.com/. Zuora is also providing a Z-Commerce for the Cloud code sample for developers to embed in their cloud solutions at http://developer.zuora.com/samplecode.html.

Commentary

“Cloud computing is poised to change the way our customers do business, and we’re working to ensure that Windows Azure will enable these companies to quickly develop and deploy cloud-based applications,” said Michael Maggs, senior director, Windows Azure partner strategy at Microsoft. “The importance of Zuora’s solution is that it helps give developers and ISVs the flexibility to monetize their applications based on any pricing variables.”

“The single most important service for ISVs in the cloud is the ability to monetize, and Zuora removes the friction of building a payment ecosystem and manages the constant changes that come with subscription management,” said Shawn Price, president and general manager at Zuora. “We are excited to be chosen by Microsoft and to offer our expertise in cloud-based billing and commerce so the 10,000 Azure developers and customers will be able to launch and monetize their applications quickly.”

New Release Showcases the Advantages of Multi-Tenant SaaS, Renders Integration Templates Obsolete

BERWYN, PA–(Marketwire – June 16, 2010) – Boomi®, the Integration Cloud Company™, today announced the release of AtomSphere Summer ’10, the newest version of its flagship integration platform, Boomi AtomSphere®. AtomSphere Summer ’10 features the industry’s first and only suggestion wizard for data mapping that is able to tap into the knowledge of an entire user community including the thousands of data maps created on the AtomSphere platform globally since its launch in 2007. By leveraging every data map created by and for the AtomSphere community, the wizard, called Boomi SuggestSM, provides users with the ability to recommend and automatically generate mappings. Users can also utilize Boomi Suggest to benchmark their maps against the community to ensure they are following best practices for integration.

Additionally, AtomSphere Summer ’10 includes a new user interface built in HTML5, advanced user management functionality with custom roles and enhanced configuration management capabilities. These upgrades were based on specific feedback from the Boomi community of developers, partners, ISVs and end users.

Exploiting the inherent advantages of multi-tenant SaaS, Boomi Suggest harnesses the collective intelligence of the global Boomi community to greatly simplify the data mapping process, which is the most time consuming step of integration development. As users build and deploy integrations, the data maps used in those integrations are anonymously indexed. When new integrations are built, Boomi Suggest recommends mappings based on powerful ranking algorithms that weight suggestions based on similarity and relationships of data fields. Users then review and approve the suggestions and the data map is automatically generated, typically with 80 percent of the required mappings. Every time a new data map is created on the AtomSphere platform its fields are added to Boomi Suggest (with no tie to the actual data being mapped) to continuously improve the wizard’s “intelligence” and improve the accuracy of the mapping suggestions.

“This kind of innovation, leveraging the collective intelligence of an entire user community to the benefit of every user, is simply not possible with legacy integration products and appliances,” said Rick Nucci, Boomi CTO. “Boomi is serious about the commitment we made to our community to continually drive innovation in cloud computing. Simplifying the data mapping process of integration creates substantial efficiencies and dramatically speeds ROI.”

Judith Hurwitz, President and CEO of Hurwitz & Associates, added, “Data integration in a cloud environment is complicated by the need to map data in a way that is logical. This issue of data mapping is made more difficult by the security and governance challenges of the cloud computing environment. Boomi appears to be taking a well thought out approach to this problem.”

Additionally, Boomi continues to tap its community to drive upgrades and add functionality for AtomSphere. Again, the multi-tenant architecture approach shortens the development and deployment time for these updates meaning end users can see real product evolution with each release. Other new features in AtomSphere Summer ’10 include:

An updated user interface built using HTML5 which also incorporates numerous enhancement requests from the Boomi community.

A new rollback feature for building integration processes. Users can now roll back to any prior version of an integration process.

Advanced user management capabilities with ability to create custom roles — a key requirement of larger enterprises.

“The ability to leverage the AtomSphere library of data maps jumpstarts the mapping process which is historically the most laborious stage in application integration,” said Amrith Nambiar, Director of Business Applications, from Mindjet. “Boomi Suggest takes care of the standard mapping with a high degree of accuracy, freeing up our time to focus on more strategic customization. The potential for Boomi Suggest to help drive best practices in application integration is enormous.”

Oracle buys Sun. HP buys 3Com. SAP buys Sybase. Just when it seemed like consolidation among the big data-center vendors had played itself out, we’re off again at full tilt. Multiple trends are driving the latest acquisitions wave: The economy is recovering, customers are demanding systems that are easier to implement and vendors seem intent on collapsing the divide between servers, network and storage.

So who’s next on the block? We asked some of IDG’s expert bloggers to pull out their crystal balls and make some bold merger predictions for the near future. Some are obvious, some controversial, but any one of them would give corporate CIOs a lot to think about if they woke up tomorrow morning to find out it had happened.

IBM buys Amazon Web Services

By Alan Shimel, author of Network World’s Open Source Fact and Fiction blog

The company that coined the phrase “on-demand computing” has been rather timid about the cloud. While Microsoft has Azure and Google its App Engine, IBM is not going to sit out the biggest computing migration in a generation. Jeff Bezos, on the other hand, is a Renaissance man. From his humble bookstore beginnings, he built Amazon.com into the biggest retailer on the Internet. He is bankrolling a project to put tourists in space. And unbeknown to many outside of the technology world, he has made AWS the dominant provider of public cloud services.

While cloud computing may turn out to be the biggest story in enterprise IT, Bezos’ investors want Amazon to maximize their returns. The Amazon Empire is too far-flung. At the end of the day, space is far above the clouds and much sexier to Bezos. He will sell the cloud service to pursue the stars. The money AWS generates from a sale could fund a lot of rocket ships.

Who has the money, the desire and deserves to be hosting a good chunk of the public cloud? Big Blue, that’s who. Who better to combine private and public clouds for true on-demand enterprise computing? IBM will make the hybrid cloud a reality. It has the software and services to offer both infrastructure as a service and platform as a service. IBM more than anyone has the resources, experience and business model to take AWS and fulfill the cloud destiny.

Who knows. When IBM reaches the cloud, it may find Jeff Bezos hovering above it in space.

(Shimel, CEO of The CISO Group, can be reached at alan@thecisogroup.com and on the Web at http://www.securityexe.com)

HP buys Teradata

By Robert Mullins, author of Network World’s Microsoft Tech blog

When considering a tie-up between Teradata and HP, it’s not just about strategy; it’s also personal. Before being made HP’s CEO in 2005, Mark Hurd spent 25 years at NCR, including a stint as president and chief operating officer of its Teradata division. Teradata was spun off from NCR in 2007, and Hurd later hired Ben Barnes, a former Teradata general manager, to run HP’s Business Intelligence division.

Hurd’s plan was to take on Teradata with HP’s Neoview, based on the NonStop SQL database that HP acquired when it bought Compaq. But Neoview hasn’t turned out so well. “HP Neoview is reeling,” Monash Research said in a March report. “(Almost) nobody sees Neoview competitively.”

Yet high-end data warehouses are a profitable and growing business, one that HP yearns to have a strong hand in. Two years ago it partnered with Oracle on its Exadata machine, a hardware-software combo that paired HP servers with Oracle’s database. Fast-forward to today and Oracle has dropped HP for Sun Microsystems, its latest big acquisition. Buying Teradata would allow HP to jump back in the game with a high-speed data warehousing stack and potentially deal Oracle some vengeance.

HP has built its software business on acquisitions: Peregrine Systems for $425 million in 2005, Mercury Interactive for $4.5 billion in 2006, Opsware for $1.6 billion in 2007. With Teradata it would get some screamingly fast appliance hardware in the bargain.

It wouldn’t be cheap: Teradata’s market capitalization is more than $5 billion. But it would be a smart growth move for HP.
