Cloud lock-in a bigger issue than security Before LabSlice I was employed as a Security Architect for a major bank. Banks, government departments and  health providers are naturally suspicious of technology solutions that they do not fully control. This is why cloud security is frequently listed as a concern for big industry, typically followed by operational uptime concerns. What you can’t control with your big budget is usually what you fear will backfire and cause you trouble. But that’s not my stance. In general there is little that differentiates normal security concerns from cloud security concerns, and the big players (Amazon, Google and Microsoft) can

How Cloud Computing Can Create Jobs “Few companies that installed computers to reduce the employment of clerks have realized their expectations…. They now need more and more expensive clerks even though they call them ‘operators’ or ‘programmers.’” – Peter Drucker (1909-2005), American management guru and author. As Peter Drucker wrote, new technologies do not reduce employment; they simply raise the level of skill required to be employed. Those who can change, prosper; those who can’t, have to settle for low-paying jobs or join the ranks of the unemployed. Take IT maintenance for example. With cloud computing, businesses will no longer

Practically Speaking About Cloud Computing Before getting into the nitty gritty of what we did in our projects for hardening the cloud servers hosted by us, we would like to emphasize the following, so that these can be firmly embedded in the mind set of readers. First, the way cloud computing is attracting attention is mind boggling. Enterprises have started adopting to cloud concept where in they go for sharing public infrastructure. Having started this trend, it will go without any stopping in future. Traditional Security measures practiced in-house are not enough in the new trend. Second, the inherent nature

Cloud Computing Standards: How Important Are They? “If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.” – Lord Kelvin (1824-1907), British physicist and engineer. Lord Kelvin, father of the absolute temperature scale now named after him, got it right more than a hundred years ago. Measurement is critical to improvement, whether it be a product or process. Even the management doctrine of “What cannot be measured cannot be managed” has its origins in Kelvin’s pronouncement. Well, why are we quoting Kelvin in an article on cloud computing? For the simple reason that cloud computing, in spite of its meteoric rise,

When ISVs plan to build applications using cloud computing services, they have two key decisions to make: What services to build, and  what sort of application to build? One approach is to build a traditional enterprise application, carryout minimal modification and run it on a particular provider’s cloud system infrastructure such as Microsoft Azure or Amazon’s EC2.  These are hosted applications running on cloud infrastructure and benefit from hardware virtualization, but are not optimized cloud applications or cloud application services. A second approach is to create a cloud-optimized application that uses various programming models, architectures and techniques to exploit the dynamic
