Dell: CEOs May be Expecting too Much from Cloud IT professionals see huge potential in the Cloud, but say that CEOs may be expecting too much, according to a Dell sponsored survey of information technology (IT) professionals by independent market research firm, Marketing Solutions Corporation. The survey findings clearly reveal gaps between IT professionals and their non-technical senior executives regarding the potential of cloud computing.  About 47 percent of respondent said they were most likely to view cloud as an extension of long-term trends toward remote networks and virtualization. 37 percent percent of those surveyed said cloud is a radically

Progressive Cloud Backups Improve Recovery Efficiency One of the biggest benefits of switching from a manual (usually tape-based FIFO or GFS backup rotations) methodology to a cloud-based backup service is the fact that it allows companies to begin performing progressive backups without having to purchase any new hardware. Progressive backups are extremely efficient and fully automated. This is part of the reason why they’re so popular amongst larger organizations. The difference between progressive (incremental forever) backups and standard traditional backups can be a bit difficult to understand. So we’ve put together a short video explaining the difference between the various

What Does the US Military Want from Cloud Computing? Polytetraflouroethylene or PTFE was an exotic substance accidentally invented by DuPont chemist Dr. Roy Plunkett in 1938. In spite of its less-than-ordinary origins, PTFE was found to have some extraordinary properties – high heat resistance, high corrosion resistance and the lowest coefficient of friction of any substance yet manufactured. At the height of WWII, its composition was a closely guarded secret, but today we know it as Teflon. The reason behind this anecdote is to demonstrate the close relation between science and the military. After all, many of the greatest advances

Perhaps the number-one problem IT faces in its pursuit of cloud computing is the challenge of integrating legacy systems with cloud applications. Most software or application vendors have Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) written that that provide access to the data or processes in their systems, leaving individual IT teams to create the programs and infrastructure that manage these interfaces. That might seem like a straightforward task, but anyone who has attempted it knows that it is neither quick nor simple when dozens of applications are involved. The benefits of solving this issue are clear. Legacy systems run on expensive and

Microsoft Office 365 – Reviewed In Plain English Office 365 is a re-launch of Microsoft BPOS. The clumsily named Business Productivity Online Suite is bizarrely also referred to on their own website as Business Productivity Online Software and Services at the same time giving the impression that the branding was never quite spot on. The basic Office 365 package is basically an upgrade to the 2010 versions of Exchange, SharePoint, Office Communications Online and Live Meeting – the last two which have become one and are now known as Lync. More interestingly though are the additional Office Software Online options
